WASHINGTON—Statement by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on U.S. Department of Education’s guidance on gender equity in career and technical education programs:

“Young women should be able to shatter the glass ceiling in manufacturing, engineering and other careers that are traditionally thought to be male-oriented. Kudos to the Department of Education for providing civil rights guidance to ensure equitable gender access and participation in career and technical education programs. High-quality CTE programs have given young women and men valuable training and apprenticeship opportunities that have led to well-paying, marketable careers.

“We urge Congress to prioritize the reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act so we can develop high-quality CTE programs that are accessible to all.”
