WASHINGTON— American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the introduction of the End Surprise Billing Act:

“Instead of tearing down the Affordable Care Act—which will only lead to less coverage and a rise in medical debt—Republicans should get behind commonsense legislation like the End Surprise Billing Act, a bill that will curb costs for patients.

“One-fourth of Americans are being forced to choose between paying for rent or food, and paying healthcare bills, simply because they sought needed care. This bill protects patients from costly surprise medical bills by requiring insurance companies to cover their fair share of expenses in emergency situations and by giving patients the information they need to avoid encounters with out-of-network providers. I applaud Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) for taking action on this important issue, and I encourage their colleagues to support this legislation.”
