"Millions of American families have been unable to afford their mortgage payments through no fault of their own; they've seen their property values plummet and faced banks unwilling to negotiate with them. We also know that providing safe and stable homes for our children is essential to helping them learn and thrive in the classroom.
 
"Today's settlement offers critical relief to millions of homeowners struggling to keep a roof over their heads and provide for their families. We applaud New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, California Attorney General Kamala Harris and others who fought to strengthen this settlement and ensure that the banks responsible for creating this housing crisis  be held accountable for fraudulent and potentially illegal conduct."
