WASHINGTON—Statement by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the National Conference of State Legislators’ new report, 'No Time to Lose: How to Build a World-Class Education System State by State’:
“I applaud this bipartisan committee and the work it has done. In a model for others, the committee sets aside political ideologies to work together for what’s best for students and educators. These findings reinforce what teachers know all too well: We must have the time, tools and trust we need to do our jobs.
“This is a very important step from the National Conference of State Legislators,” Weingarten said. "The Every Student Succeeds Act creates an education reset, with the states now being the movers and shakers, so this is a rare opportunity for the United States to look at some of the best international practices and apply them here. By focusing on what students and educators actually need, we can work together to reclaim the promise of public education.”
The bipartisan “No Time to Lose” report, published on Aug. 9 by the National Conference of State Legislators, explores international best practices and identifies the policies that lead to educational excellence in top-performing countries. Read the report here.
