WASHINGTON—Statement from American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the Department of Education’s new enforcement action against ITT Technical Institute—one that has already sent ITT stocks plummeting and will likely bankrupt the for-profit higher education giant:

“For some time, we and others have raised concerns that ITT Tech is nothing more than a predatory business venture more concerned with making a buck than giving students the high-quality education they pay for and deserve.

“Today’s Department of Education enforcement action against the corporate higher education giant is an important step to counteract its predatory practices, and it tells America what the AFT has been saying for years: We can’t be a country that tells students that college is really important but then allows predatory institutions to stick them with crippling debt, worthless degrees and an uncertain future. And it sends a clear message to institutions trying to scam our nation’s aspiring students and to elected officials turning a blind eye to fraud: You will be exposed and suffer consequences for profit-first, students-last motives.”
