WASHINGTON— American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten released the following statement on the introduction of the Improving Access to Affordable Prescription Drugs Act:

“Skyrocketing prescription drug costs are compromising patients’ ability to access needed care. Prices will only come down if drugmakers are forced to disclose research and development, manufacturing, and marketing costs; if Medicare has the power to negotiate drug prices; and if we expedite access to lower-cost, generic alternatives to brand-name drugs.

“This legislation helps remove costly prescription drugs as a barrier to high-quality healthcare. We thank Sen. Al Franken and Rep. Jan Schakowsky for their leadership on this important issue and urge their colleagues to support this bill’s passage.”
