WASHINGTON—The American Federation of Teachers’ Share My Lesson digital platform of lesson plans and other resources opens a three-day virtual conference on Tuesday featuring such diverse, timely topics as preventing bullying, how to protect students in an anti-immigrant climate, how to spot fake news, and self-esteem for kids with learning and attention issues. So far, a record 6,000 educators have registered to participate for this fifth SML virtual conference.
The www.sharemylesson.com virtual conference is free and will feature more than 30 webinars. Educators can receive professional development credit for participation. The “use right now” topics are AFT’s response to a real hunger for resources and ideas to support teachers in the classroom.
The theme of the March 14 webinars will be creating healthy schools and communities for every child’s success and professional growth for educators. Topics include preventing bullying, resources for English language learners, engaging parents, and helping kids heal from trauma and manage stress.
The theme of the March 15 webinars will be science, technology, engineering and math issues. Wednesday’s keynote at 7 p.m. EDT will be “Protecting Our Students in an Anti-Immigrant Environment,” presented by Teaching Tolerance, a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, and the National Immigration Law Center.
The theme of the March 16 webinars will be English language arts, civics and social studies. There are two keynote addresses on Thursday: “The Future of Public Education” will be presented by AFT President Randi Weingarten at 6 p.m. EDT. “How to Spot Fake News and Train Students to be Educated News Consumers” will be presented by Listenwise, PBS NewsHour Extra and Stanford History Education Group at 8 p.m. EDT.
