WASHINGTON—American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten and Illinois Federation of Teachers President Daniel Montgomery on the election of Tammy Duckworth to the U.S. Senate:

AFT President Randi Weingarten:

“By electing Tammy Duckworth as their junior senator, the people of Illinois have sent an American hero and the embodiment of the American dream to represent them. Duckworth served her country in the military and in the House of Representatives, where she fought for affordable higher education and abating student debt, and for every child to have a high-quality public education, regardless of his or her ZIP code. The people of Illinois sent a clear message that partisan politics and obstructionism, as well as hateful and racist rhetoric, have no place in our country. Sen.-elect Duckworth will be a valuable partner to Sen. Dick Durbin to move a progressive agenda for our country.”

IFT President and AFT Vice President Daniel Montgomery:

“Time and time again, Tammy Duckworth has shown us her commitment to education and building an economy that works for all, not just those at the top. IFT members have been proud to fight for Tammy, because she’s always fighting for us. She has given so much to our country as a veteran and a legislator, and I know she will continue to work hard in representing our great state alongside Sen. Dick Durbin.”
