AFT's Weingarten: "While we're disappointed that Judge Conley did not uphold the right of workers to collectively bargain, it is gratifying that he found Gov. Walker's excessive overreach politically motivated and illegal."
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Statement of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on Judge Conley's ruling striking down Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker' legislation prohibiting payroll union dues deduction and requiring collective bargaining units to take annual votes to maintain certification as a union:
"While we're disappointed that Judge William Conley did not uphold the right of workers to collectively bargain, it is gratifying that he found Gov. Walker's excessive overreach politically motivated and illegal. The ruling strikes down key provisions and serves as a strong rebuke to the governor. Our democracy is strengthened when people have their First Amendment right to freely express themselves in the workplace and the public square."
