WASHINGTON—The American Federation of Teachers convention will be held in Minneapolis July 18-21, celebrating the union’s centennial anniversary by honoring our accomplishments over the past 100 years and addressing how they will inspire our future, including the political showdown this fall.
About 3,000 delegates are expected to converge on the Minneapolis Convention Center. Delegates come from all five AFT constituencies—preK-12th grade teachers, paraprofessionals and other school support staff, higher education faculty and staff, nurses and other healthcare professionals, and public employees.
The AFT was founded on May 9, 1916, in Chicago, when eight local unions formed the AFT and were granted a charter signed by American Federation of Labor President Samuel Gompers. Today, the AFT has 1.6 million members and is the second-largest AFL-CIO union.
AFT President Randi Weingarten’s keynote speech will be Monday, July 18. Other speakers and plenary session themes will be announced over the next few weeks.
Members of the media who would like to attend should contact Janet Bass at AFT Media Affairs.
